Support the expansion and acceleration of conservation efforts across the Waikato River catchment.

ReGen Waikato, formerly known as the Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust or WCEET, supports conservation work around the Waikato River, Lake Taupō and their tributaries.

It was founded in 2002 as a collaboration between Mercury NZ (as it is now known) and a number of conservation groups to invest and manage the funding the company provides for addressing the environmental impact of it’s Waikato River dams.

The ReGen Waikato Fund, originally called the Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust Fund, was set up at Momentum Waikato by the Trust in 2022 to provide both a new investment income stream and an easy way for the public to donate towards the expansion and long-term sustainability of this conservation support.

The purpose of ReGen Waikato is to support the ecological health of the Lake Taupō and Waikato River Catchment — enhancing and maintaining the awa, its adjoining land, indigenous biodiversity, fisheries, and game bird populations. This is achieved through funding allocated to high-impact projects that deliver genuine change and tangible outcomes.

In collaboration with a wide range of organisations, agencies, and individuals, ReGen Waikato’s work includes:

  • enhancing and maintaining wetland values

  • enhancing and maintaining indigenous biodiversity

  • enhancing and maintaining the sports fishery and game bird populations

  • mitigating adverse effects of the Waikato Hydro Scheme on local ecology.

The ReGen Waikato board includes representatives from Mercury NZ, Fish and Game NZ, the Department of Conservation - DoC, Forest and Bird, and the Advisory Committee on the Regional Environment - ACRE.

Recent ReGen Waikato projects include the Farrelly Calves restoration of the Kakepuku Corridor and the completion of Waikato RiverCare's Mangawara Lagoon/Wetlands Project.
